Well folks, I never thought I would say this but…I SIGNED UP TO RUN A 5K! How crazy is that?! I signed up for the Lampson Cable Bridge Run on December 16, 2017, which means I have just about 6 weeks to train and prepare.
If you know me, you would know the answer to that question is: “Shyanne, that’s pretty crazy.” Want to know why? I have never been a fan of running. Let’s just say that while it’s some peoples’ sport, it was always my sport’s punishment.
Growing up, I played volleyball and softball. They were my passions, and in some ways are still passions of mine today. While practices for those sports often involved running, they never included voluntary, 3.1-mile running just for fun. And that is exactly what I just signed up for.
You may be asking: “Ok, so if you hate running so much, why did you sign up?” and that would be a very fair question. I signed up for so many reasons, which I am going to go through with you now.
First, I signed up because I am trying to focus more on my health – physical and mental. I recently had a medical diagnosis that shook me to my core. I was told that I have extremely high cholesterol. While that may not sound serious, I assure you that it is.
My doctor essentially told me that if I don’t get things straightened out and get in better health, I could potentially have a heart attack in my 30’s. That, friends, is NOT okay. So I’ve been trying my best to eat healthier, exercise more, and live a generally healthier life. Thankfully, high cholesterol can often be managed by diet changes and exercise so that is what I am doing.
Now, back to the 5K! I was able to convince a couple of friends to run this crazy thing with me and I couldn’t be more thankful! Having a support network is truly the key to any success, and I have found that having a distinguished, clear goal has been helping with my motivation and my dedication to working out.
Before, I would tell myself I needed to go to the gym “because I should” or “because it is good for me.” Now, I have a clear end goal with a set deadline pushing me to see if I can do it. If you would like to keep up on the progress of my training, follow my personal Instagram account here or on my Sincerely, Shyanne Twitter account here.
For now, let’s just hope that I can survive this training and subsequent 5K run!
